The NANCY project is helping to reshape how wireless connectivity is delivered and consumed across Europe. With its latest progress in network resource management, the project introduces innovations that make it possible for more stakeholders—beyond traditional operators—to participate in providing network services. These advancements support flexible access, cost efficiency, and new business models, paving the way for smarter and more inclusive digital infrastructure.

NANCY is focused on designing and developing network functions that enable flexible and efficient resource management in future Beyond 5G (B5G) networks. Different groundbreaking concepts in the field of next-generation networks are being considered:

  • Computational offloading & user-centric Caching: Devices can securely share computing and storage resources, anticipating user needs and ensuring data privacy and availability, even in mobile nodes.
  • Resource Elasticity: Intelligent algorithms enable dynamic scaling of resources to meet shifting network conditions, ensuring consistent quality of service.
  • Cooperative and Ultra-Reliable Access: New protocols have been developed that eliminate traditional fixed cells, enabling simultaneous and cooperative access for thousands of devices with low latency and high security.
  • Semantic and Goal-Oriented Communication: Instead of transmitting all data, only information relevant to achieving the communication’s goal is sent—saving energy, reducing latency, and easing network congestion.
  • Smart Pricing Policies: A decentralized pricing model powered by AI, auction theory, and game theory dynamically adjusts service costs and rewards stakeholders offering infrastructure and services.

These developments mark a shift toward more adaptive, human-centric, and sustainable network architectures. They also support the broader European goal of increasing digital sovereignty and enabling new, decentralized connectivity models.

“We are proud to lead work that brings advanced connectivity closer to all citizens, making networks more intelligent, adaptive, and equitable.”

— Dr. Sanchez-Iborra, WP4 Leader, University of Murcia
